1.1 MODULAR CONTROLLERS
Hench Control Corporation has created a control system that consists of a set of Control Modules that can be used like building blocks to create a complete Control System.

Our unique approach to refrigeration control is to modularize and standardize the various control functions of an industrial refrigeration system such as compressors, condensers and evaporators. A Hench Control System consists of an assembly of individual modules, which independently control their own portion of the refrigeration system but are part of a network to provide seamless control of the entire refrigeration system.

Installed on each Module is an appropriate number of digital and analog input and output modules to control or monitor individual devices such as motor starters, loaders/unloaders, pressure and temperature sensors.

The advantages of this building block approach include:

Smooth and rapid start-ups are ensured by using identical Control Modules at successive facilities and performing a thorough factory pre-test under simulated site conditions.
Custom requirements and future modifications to the refrigeration system are easily accommodated by adding or changing I/O modules plugged into each Control Module. Each Control Module has an inherent I/O capacity for devices such as compressors, condensers, blast freezers, pressure sensors, temperature sensors, ammonia sensors and lights. Existing spare capacity may be activated at any time to accommodate changing needs.
Additional Controller Modules are easily added as a facility’s needs grow. If the capacity of a Controller Module is exceeded, the operator needs only to install an additional appropriate Controller Module and full control capabilities are realized. Each new Controller Module coordinates with existing Controller Modules to provide a seamless control system.
Fast system response, sophisticated control capabilities and improved system reliability is obtained by locating the “brains” of the Hench System within each individual Controller Module. These fully distributed Controller Modules are installed nearest to where the data is to be gathered or instructions to be carried out, substantially increasing speed and the ability to perform intelligent control.
1.2 MICROPROCESSOR BASED
The heart of each Control Module is an Intel microprocessor chip. Each Controller Module is in fact a computer designed specifically for particular refrigeration control applications. The Hench System’s Controller Module hardware provides a number of unique advantages:
Control software is permanently burned into Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM) chips on each Controller Module. This means that each Controller Module can operate on a stand-alone basis and independently of the central computer.
Controller Modules withstand the rigors of extreme conditions and are manufactured to rigid specifications. The UL/CSA approved Controller Modules feature filters, varistors and optical isolation to protect the hardware from electrical noise, spikes and other power impurities.
Each Controller Module is pre-programmed and completely pre-tested at the factory under simulated site conditions, confirming components to be in good working order and the control strategy to be working as desired ensuring smooth start-ups.
The central PC is available for other tasks or software packages since the Hench System’s vital control resides in the PROMs and RAM of each individual Controller Module. The PC uses a Windows XP based operator interface allowing multi-tasking and integration with many non-proprietary software packages, such as: animated color graphics, data logging, spreadsheets, auto-dialers and remote communication packages.
1.3 HIGH LEVEL PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE
Use of a powerful microprocessor permits the control software to be programmed in a high-level computer language. Utilizing a true computer programming language allows Hench Control to provide users with superior control capabilities, including:
Sophisticated calculations to improve efficiency such as compressor power-to-capacity ratios, degree of deviation from setpoints and saturation curves are performed automatically.
Easy operator customization of advanced control strategies including adding equipment, altering sequences, changing setpoints, adjusting delays and fine-tuning other control parameters to best suit specialized or changing needs without reprogramming for each application.
Operator selectable parameters are saved to Random Access Memory (RAM) on the microprocessor allowing quick and easy changes. The microprocessors automatically return to operator-selected parameters rather than factory defaults in the event of power disruptions.
